Where the wild still makes the rules

Off-grid adventures in legendary vintage 4x4s — on the roads the guidebooks leave out. Small, personal, uncompromisingly real.

Explore our journeys

4x4 holidays

We don’t do lodges with pools. We do dry riverbeds, roof tents and the sound of an old V8 at dawn. Six vintage 4x4s, two to twelve guests — and the roads the guidebooks leave out. This is only possible because we run our own fully equipped vehicles. Trips are run on a camping basis — with the occasional lodge or B&B where one exists at all out here.

Four countries, one rhythm

Routes are stitched together from dry riverbeds, flood plains and tracks that only exist for part of the year.

The concept

Real off-grid adventure — on our own wheels. We take you to places in Namibia and its neighbouring countries that ordinary travellers never see — the most isolated regions, the least-travelled tracks, the great ephemeral rivers, and the wild areas where indigenous communities still live by their traditional ways.

We travel beyond the gravel-road circuit: into isolated regions, across the great ephemeral rivers, along routes ordinary rental vehicles are never permitted to attempt. Fully equipped and self-reliant, every journey carries a nostalgia the modern safari has lost.

Living among the wild

Travelling with African Explorers means experiencing the last true wildernesses of southern Africa — remote regions where nature still rules and wildlife roams free.

What our travellers say

“This was nature at its rawest and most beautiful — untouched, authentic, and awe-inspiring. African Explorers truly takes you where others don’t. Our family has traveled extensively around the world, but this trip surpassed them all.”

David L.Namibia, Botswana & Zimbabwe · Google review, 2026

“Going on a trip with Marcel is not a normal vacation, it’s an adventure! It is not like visiting and viewing the beauty of Namibia’s nature — it’s like being part of it for a while.”

Tim M.Okavango, Chobe & Kaokoveld · Google review, 2026

“Animals up close in the wild, fantastic landscapes, tracks beyond the tourist trails, sleeping outdoors under the stars, food from the campfire — all seasoned with Marcel’s love for the country and respect for animals and nature. That was Africa pure.”

Angelika & Uwe M., 72 and 73Namibia · Google review, 2026

“The best experience I’ve ever had: the wild side of Namibia, two weeks sleeping in a rooftop tent, no humans for hundreds of kilometers. Best of all was our guide, ranger and storyteller Marcel!”

Cristian V.Ugab, Huab & Hoanib · Google review, 2026

“An unforgettable off-road adventure. Barely accessible areas that you only reach on journeys like this. Pure nature and a deep immersion in it — unforgettable memories guaranteed.”

Born on the roads less travelled.

African Explorers began in 2019, after years of freelance guiding across Namibia, and became a registered tour company in 2021. The idea was simple: travel the parts of Southern Africa most travellers never see, and do it in vehicles with a soul.

It has grown into a family business that stays small on purpose: six vehicles, small groups and journeys built by hand for the people travelling them. Our guests come from every corner of the world, and most book about a year ahead.

Questions we get asked

How does booking work?

You send an enquiry, we talk through the route, dates and group, and you receive a written offer. A deposit secures your places; the balance is due before departure. No instalment plans — just one deposit and one final payment.

Guided expedition or guided self-drive — what is the difference?

On a guided expedition you travel in our vehicles with Marcel at the wheel. On a guided self-drive you drive your own fully equipped rental 4x4 and follow a guide vehicle — you get the driving, we handle the navigation, camps, permits and recovery.

Do I need 4x4 experience?

Not for guided expeditions. For guided self-drive, some experience helps, and we brief you on sand, mud and water crossings before we leave Windhoek. Only the Extreme Expedition through the Kaokoveld requires solid off-road experience.

What is included?

Everything except activities: guide, vehicles, fuel, camping and park fees, equipment, food and drinks. Flights, visas and personal travel insurance are not included.

How do we sleep?

Mostly in roof tents on the vehicles — with proper mattresses, a hot shower where we can rig one and dinner around the fire. On most routes one or two nights are spent in rooms or a lodge where one exists at all out there.

When is the best time to travel?

May to October is dry, cool at night and best for wildlife. November to April is the green season: hotter, greener, emptier — and the time of year for mud and water crossings in Botswana.

How big are the groups?

Two to twelve people. Most journeys run as private groups — couples, families, friends — and every route can be adjusted.

How remote is it really?

Very. On the Kaokoveld and Kalahari routes there is no phone signal for days. We carry satellite communication, a full recovery kit, spares and a guide who has driven every one of these tracks many times.
